Motivation – What It Really Is and How It Influences Our Actions

Motivation is one of those words we hear all the time. We talk about being motivated, losing motivation, waiting for motivation to come back. It’s often treated like a magical force that either shows up and makes everything easy—or disappears and leaves us stuck. When motivation is high, we feel unstoppable. When it’s gone, even small tasks feel overwhelming.

What is motivation?

At its core, motivation is the reason behind action. It’s the internal or external drive that pushes you to start something, continue it, or stop doing something else. Motivation answers the question: why am I doing this?

There are two main types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation comes from within. It’s driven by enjoyment, curiosity, meaning, or personal values. You do something because it feels satisfying or aligned with who you are. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, comes from outside rewards or pressures—money, recognition, deadlines, praise, or fear of consequences.

Both types matter, and neither is “bad.” Problems arise when motivation relies only on external pressure. When rewards disappear or results slow down, motivation often collapses. Intrinsic motivation tends to be more sustainable, but it also takes time to develop.

Motivation is also closely tied to energy. When you’re exhausted, stressed, underfed, or sleep-deprived, motivation drops—even if you care deeply about the goal. This is why motivation isn’t just a mindset issue; it’s also a physical and emotional one.

But motivation isn’t magic, and it isn’t random. It’s a psychological process that follows certain patterns and rules. Understanding what motivation really is—and how it works—can completely change the way you approach goals, habits, and progress. Instead of chasing motivation, you learn how to work with it.

 How the motivation mechanism works

Motivation doesn’t work in a straight line. It follows cycles. At the beginning of something new, motivation is usually high. Novelty, excitement, and hope trigger dopamine—the brain chemical associated with anticipation and reward. This phase feels great, but it’s temporary.

As novelty fades and effort becomes routine, motivation naturally dips. This is where many people think something is wrong. In reality, this phase is normal. The brain no longer gets excited by the idea—it now responds to systems, habits, and progress.

Another key part of the motivation mechanism is feedback. When actions lead to visible results, motivation strengthens. When results are delayed or unclear, motivation weakens. This is why long-term goals are harder to stick to than short-term ones—the reward feels too far away.

Motivation is also influenced by identity. When an action aligns with how you see yourself (“I’m someone who trains,” “I’m someone who learns”), motivation becomes more automatic. You’re not forcing yourself—you’re acting in line with who you believe you are.

The most common myths about motivation

One of the biggest myths is that motivation should be constant. People often think that if they were “truly motivated,” they’d feel driven every day. In reality, motivation fluctuates for everyone. Expecting it to be permanent leads to frustration and self-blame.

Another common myth is that lack of motivation equals laziness. Most of the time, low motivation is a signal—not a flaw. It can signal exhaustion, unrealistic goals, emotional overload, or lack of clarity. Ignoring these signals and pushing harder often makes things worse.

There’s also the belief that motivation comes before action. In many cases, it’s the opposite. Action often creates motivation, not the other way around. Small steps generate momentum, and momentum rebuilds motivation.

Finally, many people believe motivation alone leads to success. In reality, motivation starts the process, but habits, structure, and discipline carry it forward. Motivation gets you moving—but systems keep you going when motivation fades.

Motivation isn’t a mysterious force you either have or don’t have. It’s a dynamic process shaped by biology, psychology, environment, and habits. Understanding how motivation works makes it easier to stop fighting yourself and start working smarter. Instead of waiting to feel motivated, the real shift happens when you design your actions, goals, and routines in a way that supports motivation naturally. When you stop expecting motivation to be perfect and constant, it becomes a useful tool—not a fragile condition.
